  11. QUICKTAKE AND THE POWER MACINTOSH UPGRADE CARD

If you have already installed QuickTake software on your Macintosh, and later you install the Power Macintosh Upgrade Card, you must reinstall the QuickTake software.  The Installer automatically installs an accelerated QuickTake Image extension and a new version of Shared Library Manager for the Power Macintosh.

  16. WARNING ABOUT EXTENSIONS
  17.  
  18. Some extensions interfere with the QuickTake 1.0 Installer.  To avoid problems, press and hold down the Shift key while you start up your Macintosh.  This turns off the extensions temporarily.  When installation is complete and you restart your Macintosh, the extensions start up as usual.

  21. QUICKTAKE 1.0 AND QUICKTAKE SETUP
  22.  
  23. The QuickTake Setup control panel puts the camera icon on the desktop for easy access.  For instructions on using the control panel, see the addendum, ╥About QuickTake Setup╙ that came with your QuickTake 100 camera or the QuickTake Setup Read Me.

  25. You can also use the QuickTake 1.0 program while the camera icon is on the desktop, but you can't use the Camera menu.  Instead, use the File menu to work with images on the camera while the camera icon is on the desktop.

  28. WORKING WITH MANY IMAGES
  29.  
  30. If you have a large number of images in a folder, it takes longer to open a slide table.  It's best to limit the number of images to fewer than 100 per folder.

  33. VIEWING QUICKTAKE IMAGES WITHOUT QUICKTAKE 1.0
  34.  
  35. The QuickTake 1.0 software you install (with Easy Install) includes the extensions QuickTake Image and QuickTime.  You need these extensions to view images in PICT QuickTake format, created by the QuickTake 100 camera.  Occasionally, you may want to transfer images to another Macintosh (including images in documents from another application, such as word-processing documents).  If the images are in PICT QuickTake format, you won't be able to view them on the other Macintosh unless the QuickTake Image and QuickTime extensions are on the other Macintosh.

  37. To be sure that your pictures can be shared with any Macintosh, first save the images in a format other than PICT QuickTake before you transfer them.

  40. PROBLEMS WITH LIMITED RANDOM-ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)

  42. The QuickTake 1.0 software works best on a Macintosh with at least 8 MB of RAM or 4 MB of RAM with 8 MB of virtual memory.

  44. To determine how much RAM you have, go to the Finder.  Choose About This Macintosh from the Apple menu.  If the ╥Total Memory╙ shows less than 8,192K there are two ways to provide more memory: 
  45. Ñ   Use virtual memory.  (See the System 7 user╒s guide for instructions on working with virtual memory.)
  46. Ñ  Have an authorised Apple reseller install additional RAM.

  48. By the way, the QuickTake Setup control panel can be used comfortably in 2 MB of available memory (shown in the About This Macintosh box as ╥Largest Unused Block╙).

  51. PROBLEMS WITH A SHORTAGE OF AVAILABLE MEMORY

  53. Even if you have enough RAM, you may sometimes see a message that there is not enough available memory. 
  54.  
  55. To determine how much memory is available, quit any QuickTake software, then go to the Finder.  Choose About This Macintosh from the Apple menu.  If the ╥Largest Unused Block╙ shows available memory of less than 3372K, you don╒t have enough available memory to use the QuickTake program.

  57. To make more memory available, try one or both of these suggestions: 
  58. Ñ  Quit open programs that you╒re not using. 
  59. Ñ  In the Get Info window for QuickTake 1.0, change the ╥Preferred size╙ memory requirement from 3072K to 2048K.  (The ╥Preferred Size╙ plus 300K cannot total more than the ╥Largest Unused Block╙ in the About This Macintosh box.)

  62. SHARING IMAGES ON THE NETWORK

  64. You cannot use the QuickTake Setup camera icon on the desktop as a shared volume on a network.  You can share your images over the network, but first you need to copy them from the camera to your hard disk.

  66. To set access privileges for the shared folder that contains the images, select the folder and choose Sharing from the Finder╒s File menu.  In the box that appears, set the access privileges to match this example:

  86. MOVING QUICKTAKE IMAGES WITH APPLE REMOTE ACCESS

  88. If you╒re moving images from the camera to a remote file server with Apple Remote Access, first move them to your local hard disk.  Then copy them from the hard disk to the remote file server.
